Last night at Gamescom it was announced that Killer Clowns from Outerspace was getting a game and it got me wondering, what movies should have video games and who should make them? Well luckily for you I have a convenient list of 10 movies/TV shows that should be video games and who should make them.
Breaking Bad - Telltale
Breaking Bad is a series about drugs, family and tough decisions that took the world by storm in the 2010s. With over 10 million people watching the finale it baffles me that the series creators never took the opportunity to expand their story into gaming. Which is why I think Telltale would be the perfect studio for the series. Telltale has taken Guardians of the Galaxy, Game of Thrones and Borderlands, IPs with already thick and standing lore, and created their own unique spin on their stories with branching narratives. This way we are trusting a studio that is known to take great well thought liberties with existing narratives and giving them a great narrative to play around with. I can only begin to imagine the tense and difficult decisions that they can create that would mirror the show but not feel like a cheap imitation of it.

John Wick - Sloclap:
Now I am very aware that John Wick has a few games but they’ve been met with mixed reviews with the most recent John Wick: Hex scoring a 78 review and 6.2 user score on metacritic so there is still space for a 9 or 10/10 game for the beloved film franchise. As a fan of Kung-fu movies myself I’ve felt that many games have tried to emulate that east asian flair you get with The Raid 1/2 and John Wick but none have come close until Sloclap released SifuI. The only game to truly emulate what we see on screen. The quick hand to hand combat of John Wick can be perfectly brought to gamers via the talent of this studio. The Sifu Nightclub level is very heavily John Wick inspired anyways and the addition of guns will provide a major mechanic that will help the game feel like it’s more than a reskinning of Sloclap’s previous works.

Coraline -Tarsier Studios:
A movie that surely haunted all of our childhoods in a beautiful way, Coraline is a movie I still think about on a regular basis. Lovingly crafted by Laika it’s a retelling of the 2002 book by Niel Gaiman of the same name. Now why turn this into a game? Tarsier Studios is most famously known for their work on the Little Nightmares games which look as if they have been incredibly inspired by the movie Coraline but this isn’t the only reason why I believe Coraline needs a game. Running away from your other mother, circus freaks and jumping into new dimensions are all mechanics that would make for a great horror/exploration game with a beautiful artstyle (sound familiar?). Furthermore, with an already concrete story, this allows Tarsier to expand upon their minimalistic storytelling methods by letting them focus on what they do best, aesthetics.
Rambo - Crystal Dynamics:
Nostalgia sells right? Rambo really embodies the, now long lost, genre of manly man be manly man who is man doing manly man thing with big gun oooooooh. And honestly I kinda miss it. Bringing back the franchise as a well thought out, open world splode’em’up game would be welcome to many if it was handled properly and who better than Crystal Dynamics? Yes they recently hit a dud with Marvel’s Avengers but they had a sure fire hit with their new take on the beloved Tomb Raider reboot. Tight gunplay, great exploration and fun stealth, this has all the markers of a great jungle action game or movie. Hence why Crystal Dynamics deserves a shot at redemption after Marvel’s Avengers and giving them an already established well known IP that fans will have confidence in them doing right is a welcomed step in the right direction.

Black Mirror - Remedy:
Charlie Bookers Black Mirror exploded in popularity after its acquisition by Netflix but it was already a mainstay of British television prior to that. Short episodes tackling a different social issue with a unique story each time, Black Mirror has not shied away from gaming either with its dividing Bandersnatch. However, FMV games can only do so much and don’t get me wrong I love Telling Lies but a mind bending surreal story from the creators of Control? That’s money waiting to be printed. Furthermore, Netflix is already expanding into the games publishing space with its acquisition of developer Night School Studio so a triple A outing from the streaming service would be a big statement into how serious they are taking their foray into gaming.

Ant Man - Ubisoft
NOW HEAR ME OUT! Ubisoft was once considered an amazing publisher/developer. UbiArts, Cloudberry kingdom and Splintercell, Ubisoft has a ton of great IPs and behind every great IP is a team of very talented devs, which devs in this case? Ubisoft Montreal, the team behind Splintercell. Yes I am incredibly biassed considering Splintercell is my favourite franchise but any Ant Man game should surely be a stealth game? With the creative freedom of changing sizes it allows for some insane level design and great stealth moments. Need a stealth enemy for when you’re tiny? Bugs. Need stealth enemies for when you’re normal sized? Bad guys and mercenaries galore. Just think of the possibilities with an Ant Man game and think about the beautiful level design of every Splintercell game (not the mobile ones, never the mobile ones) and just think of the endless potential.
Raya and the Last Dragon - Sucker Punch:
It’s simple, Ghosts of Tsushima but family edition. Playstation needs another major family franchise if it wants anything over Nintendo and teaming up with Disney only makes sense for Sony. I also believe that if Raya and the Last Dragon was released in the early 2000s it would have a movie tie in video game the likes of the Madagascar tie in games. This is a match made in heaven in my opinion.

Inside Out - Colossal Order:
An Inside Out game can only be one thing… a management sim. The movie is essentially a management sim within itself and who better than the creator of Cities Skylines. Just imagine, using all of your emotions, a game where you control a new protagonist going through the difficult life transition of puberty and trying to keep all of those emotions in check. With regards to story, bring in some great writers to help write a story told via the gameplay mechanics. Your city breaking down as your protagonist does, the world imbued in a hue of red as they fall in love, the game writes itself… with good writers.
Dredd - Rockstar:
Dredd is a fantastic franchise that not enough people have invested themselves in. I seriously recommend everyone read the comics and it will only make more sense as to why Rockstar should be the ones who helm this game. They have experience with licensed properties with their Warriors game and they are the unspoken kings/queens of open world games. With Max Payne style grit, an open world Dredd game that deals with police corruption and the freedom for Rockstar to have some fun with mechanics and weapons, considering the futuristic setting, Rockstar can help bring back to life this great franchise.
Ghost in the Shell - Naughty Dog:
Most people’s exposure to the Ghost in the Shell series is the AWFUL Scarlett Johansen film but the first two films, lovingly crafted by Mamoru Oshii, are two of my favourites. Now what makes me even more sad is that there are two, well received Ghost in the Shell games already. Ghost in the Shell the PS1 game and Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex on PSP that we can no longer play because Sony’s backwards compatibility is shoddy at best; so a new game in the franchise lead by veteran studio Naughty Dog is needed more now than ever. Seeing Naughty Dog finally step into a futuristic setting after a few years of sequels will be a welcome change for the studio as fans will now flock to anything that they make because we have faith in the studio only producing great game after great game. The human story at the core of the original films echoes that of The Last of Us and the fun fast run and gun nature of the action scenes mirror that of the gameplay in Uncharted. PLEASE sony make this happen.
What movie + video mashups do you think I missed? I’d love to hear what you think!
